Jennifer Matthews: Mark Nathan has his hands full with his sons, Justin and Michael.
Mark Nathan: Just the fun of having these little guys around and playing with them, it's really amazing to watch little humans develop.
Jennifer Matthews: Watching them develop has been challenging. Four years ago, a procedure meant to correct his vision left Mark with a distorted view of the world.
Mark Nathan: Unfortunately, when it healed finally, it left me with double vision in the left eye.
Jennifer Matthews: Doctor Edward Manche says there are risks to corrective eye surgeries like lasik and prk. Problems can occur when an uneven amount of tissue is removed from the cornea.
Now a new laser procedure called custom-cap can correct the problem.
Dr. Edward Manche: It allows us to program the laser to treat a specific portion of the cornea and effectively recenter the treatment that has been decentered.
Jennifer Matthews: The blue in the pupil of this eye indicates a successful surgery. Here, only half the pupil is blue, leaving vision severely altered. With computer simulated custom-cap, this eye can be corrected.
Dr. Edward Manche: It's very satisfying to finally be able to tell these patients, yes, we have something that we can treat you with.
Mark Nathan: For me, it's really a life-saving procedure. It's going to impact my lifestyle quite a bit.
Jennifer Matthews: To keep track of his sons, mark says he not only needs his vision, but all the energy he can get. This is Jennifer Matthews reporting.
