Hi, I am Arthur Jackson from One On One Basketball. Today we are talking about the fundamentals of dribbling and right now we are going to talk about stance and the control dribble. We just talked about hand placement and ball placement; what we really want to focus on now, there is three main components of the control dribble. First, when we are standing, we want our feet about shoulder width apart, nice and comfortable, we want our weight little bit forward on the balls of our feet, we must make sure our knees are bent so we are there nice and low. We want to keep that ball as low as possible when we dribble.
We talked about where the ball should be bouncing but we want to make sure we are nice and low, we want to drop our hips, keep our knees bent, the lower we are the better, the harder it is for the basketball to be stolen and also the easier it is to use timing and control the ball. I keep the ball nice and low, so the first main component is keeping the ball nice and low below the waist. The higher I come up the easier it is to steal and most people when they start dribbling they stand up straight up and down, we want to get low and keep that ball below our waist. That s the first component.
The second component is we must keep our eyes up at all time. We want to able to see the court, see the defense; we don t want to turn our back. So as we are dribbling, most people when they start, they are looking down at the ball, so I keep the ball nice and low right outside my foot, same ball placement, same hand placement, second component keeping our eyes up, so I can see the whole court at all time, as I am dribbling. Again I am keeping the ball right outside my foot, nice and low. The third component is what do we do with the opposite hand, so I m dribbling with my right hand, I want to make sure that left is out, ready to protect. Even if there is not defense around, we want to teach people when they dribble the ball to keep that opposite hand up.
So as I am dribbling again, first component, nice and low, second component, eyes up, third component, opposite hand out and I want to be balanced with my shoulders, balanced with my weight, as I am leaning just a little bit forward, we are balance, we are not leaning to one side, as we dribble the basketball, a lot of people would lean and put their weight on their inside foot, we want to keep our opposite hand out and eyes up as we are dribbling. That way if the defense comes, we are ready to turn and protect, stepping through with our opposite foot, so I keep that hand up ready to go and that s our basic stance for control dribble.
Great, so now I m going to bring in my demonstrator, Lincoln to talk about basic stance and the three fundamentals of the control dribble. We are going to start off Lincoln, has his feet a little bit, about shoulder width part, the first component we are going to talk about is keeping the ball nice and low on the same ball placement. So go ahead and start dribbling. He keeps the ball right by his foot, right on the line and he is keeping it below his waist, finger tips are pointing forward, knees bent a little bit, bends his knees and gets a little bit lower with the shoulders, that is excellent. Second component, is keeping your eyes up, so you can see the whole court. So as he is dribbling he has got his eyes up and he is seeing the whole court, seeing the offense and its defensive opponents and then the last thing that we want to emphasize is the opposite hand. So he brings the opposite hand up, ready to protect the ball and he is in a great dribbling stance position, right there, very good. So those are three components and next thing we are going to talk about is dribbling on the move.
