Kevin Miller: Betty, people get cataract, because they get old and just like wrinkles and there is no way of avoiding it, there are preventive measures that you can do to slowdown cataract development like avoiding cigarette smoking, avoiding sun light exposure, avoiding trauma situations, but its part of a inevitable ageing process.

Now that's a simple answer. The more complicated answer is that there is a chemical change is occurring in the lens there are ionizing radiation changes and nutritional changes in and host of other ageing changes that are occurring, but nothing that we have at our disposal will retard that. So enjoy your vision and then when you get cataract you get cataract surgery and you will have a good result.
