Couples Retreat Interviews
Jason Bateman: Well, we’ve had a bit of a stale point or so we think in our
relationship and we’re very close to getting a divorce. But we
think, maybe we found the fix in this tropical island that
specializes in sort of a couples therapy. But we can’t afford it but
we can afford to participate in the couples’ rate or sort of the group
rate called the Pelican Package. So we asked our friends to come
along with us and they find out that therapy is not really optional.
Malin Ackerman: We’re sort of that couple that—it is pretty much. We have a pretty
good relationship. I think it’s just that life comes at you pretty fast
and you forget to take a moment to breathe and look at each other
and go, “Oh. Hi. There you are.” And I think that really is our
biggest problem which is easily mended which we figured out
throughout the course of our trip here in this beautiful paradise that
it’s just that we’ve forgotten to take time with each other.
Vince Vaughn: A lot of people kind of let you work so hard to try and provide
stuff. And then when you have kids, that really becomes your
priority. People won’t even look in the mirror and see themselves
for a year when first having kids. And your partner is like, you
may not agree on like the discipline ways or parenting. So I think
our couple feels like they’re succeeding in life and they don’t talk
through their problem and the leave and go. And then when they
got to this, they start to realize where the relationship is between
the two of them. They haven’t really been taking care of that.
John Favreau: We’re a couple that is on their last leg. They’re about to get a
divorce. They got pregnant on prom night. The kids are about to go
to college. They held their breathe and knuckle under for whatever
it was, 18 or 20 years. They have not made love to one another.
They don’t talk to each other and they’re on the brink of collapse.
And the fun part I think on the movie is to show that even a couple
where everything is worse than any couple out there, if those two
people want to make it work, there’s a way.
Kristin Davis: It was really just a complete departure and fun to be in their world.
You know, John and Vince obviously were together and Jason
and—they’re a whole group. But for me, it’s totally different in my
world.
Faison Love: My guy is just separated from his wife. He was basically divorced.
The worst ink is fresh and then he needs, right here. Foot locker,
he’s like something fresh and new, you know, guys love fresh and
new that’s why I buy cars every year because of that smell. It’s my
thing, it’s a new car.
Kali Hawk: Wow. Thank you. My character Trudy, she’s a young girl. She
works at the foot locker and she meets this guy, he probably helped
him to buy a pair of sneakers and she realizes maybe he’s a little
different than guys than she has dated. A little bit more secure,
more stable and just a synchronized guy. And she is interested in
kind of bringing some of that point and freshness into his life
because she can tell that he kind of need a little excitement.
Malin Ackerman: For me, it was very exciting to be invited into this crew. I couldn’t
believe that I still kind of can’t believe it.
Jason Bateman: You’re not going to believe it when you see the movie because we
cut her completely out. You’re still going to get paid, still full same
money.
Vince Vaughn: It’s funny because everyone was like, “Yeah, I see myself as that
relationship, kind of like more like the other relationship.” I think
you all see yourself more as that but we all have our sides to it.
That’s the fun. It’s like, the movie is not just a relationship movie
for one relationship, it is about the group dynamic. It’s about
couples. The couples that you know and have dinner or they’ll
come over just to have a barbecue. So that’s the fun. You have
different archetype dynamics, relatable problems that all people
deal with.
Faizon Love: To me, it was very—I mean, you ride your bike as you say. It
was—you’re here, you’re working. It wasn’t like a working
environment like ___. You know, we don’t have to get on the 4 or
5, you know go to the set and go in Lancaster and all that stuff.
You got up, you were here.
