Linda: Hi, I'm Linda from Woodland Hills. I occasionally crack my back. What's happening when I'm doing that and is it harmful? Jeffrey Wang: Linda, that's a great question. A lot of people crack their backs. The first thing to understand is that you not really doing any harm to your back. A lot of people feel that when they are cracking their back they're shifting their spine or that their spine is unstable. In reality, the spine is not really moving that much at all. There is a lot of tendons, ligaments and muscles that surround the spine and you really just stretching the ligaments and you may perceive a pop. You may even hear a pop from some of the joints around the muscles and tendons around the spine. But you are not doing any harm. You are not really shifting your spine to a great degree and its fine. It feels better, then there is no reason to not to do it.
