Welcome to body performance, I am Steve Terrano. Today I want to talk about how dieting slows your metabolism. We have all heard that eating five or six meals a day is a good thing and here is why, it gives your body a constant source of energy. You are digesting this food all day long keeping your metabolism in your body going.
If you begin to cut back on your caloric intake significantly, your body begins to panic. It sees this as starvation mode, pretty soon, your body is thinking, I am not sure when my next meal is coming, I better save the fat that is on my body because I am going to need this to survive on. This is not a good thing if you are trying to diet obviously.
Who has not dieted, cut back on their calories, lost of a few pounds and then weight loss stops? Cut back on your calories some more, lose a few more pounds, weight loss stops. But eventually, you cannot cut back your calories indefinitely, then once you start eating more, you put the weight right back on, not a good thing. A better thing to do is cut your caloric intake but 300 or 400 calories a day. This is a small decrease in the amount of food you are normally eating and your body would not recognize it. It would not send your body into starvation or panic mode. This will allow your body to consistently give up the fat that is on your body as a source of energy. That coupled with exercise is really the best way of dieting. So starvation diets slow your metabolism down. The best thing to do, cut back on your caloric intake slightly, exercise a little bit more, your body would not recognize this as a diet and will freely give up the body fat.
I will see you next time. Love your body.
