Audra Lowe: Welcome back to Better. Hi everybody, I’m Audra Lowe and coming up next, we’re going to introduce you to some puppies that are helping allergy sufferers. And we’ve got an inside look into the world of child modelling. But before we get to all of that, we’ve all seen the smokey eye on magazines, on the red carpet, it always looked so good on everyone else, right? But as celebrity make-up artist Mickie Williams shows Rhiannon, you don’t have to be a pro to get the sexy look.
Rhiannon Ally: This is the first and hopefully the last time you’ll see me without make-up. But Mickie is going to show us the easy smokey eyes so that you can recreate this at home and me, too. Okay, so what’s the first thing we need to do?
Mickie Williams: First, we’re going to start off with the base color and a lot of palettes come with multiple colors within them. So I’m going to take this nice little shimmery color here.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay.
Mickie Williams: And I’m going to go right along your lid. I usually tend to like to do eyes first before I put on foundation, especially the smokey eye. That way if anything falls down, I can clean it up.
Rhiannon Ally: One thing I notice is you’re not putting the lightest one on the eyelid.
Mickie Williams: No, I’m putting more of a fleshy tone on the eye and this is just my personal—I mean definitely, there are no rules in the smokey eye and no rules in make-up, so I want you to kind of experiment with your smokey eye. But I’m just taking a nice, soft fleshy color because I’m going to do a very natural kind of blended smokey eye on you.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay. So you can see that she’s put eye shadow on both sides right now, okay.
Mickie Williams: Just a nice base coat. The next step is contour and you can use any color for contour. You just want to make sure it’s a deeper shade because you want to make that section in your eye sit back. So the most important thing about contour is the brush.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay.
Mickie Williams: These two brushes are ideal for contour because you’re going to put the color on and you’re actually going to leave your eye open.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay, so leave your eye open, I like that. That’s easy.
Mickie Williams: So we’re going to take a nice, really beautiful warm brown. Leave your eye open and as you can see, it just goes right into that crease perfectly.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay, so now I actually get to try it.
Mickie Williams: I want to move on to liner. Now, everybody has their own different—whatever kind of liner they want to use is great. I personally really love gel liners because I feel like they really last and I can definitely get in there in between the lashes. And I’m going to get right in here and give you a nice thin line. And the reason why I like to do a thin line to start with a smokey eye is because I’m going to add to this line with a little shadow. It’s going to really create that kind of smoked out effect.
Now, one trick that I love and it’s another one of those things where you really do need the right brush, if you can see this brush, it has a little wedge at the top of it there. It’s a nice little kind of mini fluff if you will. My favorite thing to do with this is to go in and just grab a little bit of a darker color and you’re just going to start going right on the top of that line and you just start to slowly blend that and smoke it out.
And then our next little trick is to go ahead and pick up that dark color again and this is the final trick. You’re just going to blend in that little corner of your line to that top portion of where you put the—
Rhiannon Ally: Oh, almost like a sideways V or a little circle.
Mickie Williams: Then you have a beautiful smokey eye. There you go.
Rhiannon Ally: Look at that. Okay.
Mickie Williams: And now see, you’re a little bit lower on this side. So what we’re going to do with our bottom liner, I like to use a brush like this. You’ve seen this before, the flat eyeliner wedges, and I’m going to pick up that deeper color a lot. You don’t even to have lower lines. And then the last thing that I do is I make sure that I get a really great mascara that I can get right into the crease and everything. You get right into the corners and all the lashes. This is a little trick that I’ve got. I usually take a business card and I just hold it right to the edge here so that I can really push back the line, that mascara into your lash. And now, all we have to do is just clean it up with a little concealer and you’re ready to go out.
Rhiannon Ally: I’m ready to go out. I’m ready to hit the town.
Mickie Williams: With your smokey eye.
Rhiannon Ally: Alright.
Audra Lowe: Good deal, and you can see more of Mickie’s secrets on her website and we’re going to put a link on BetterTV.com.
