Cross Dressing Explained
On behalf of tvlesson.com, I'm Dr. Carol Clark, a sex therapist with drclarkcarol.com. Let’s talk a little bit about what is cross dressing. What is it? Cross dressing is when a person of one biological sex dresses in the clothing of the other sex and of course, this is very depending on social norms and cultural norms, what is happening in our culture. Women in our culture, in the west here in America dress like men all the time and we’re not considered cross dressers. But if a man dresses as a woman, looks like a woman dresses in skirts and blouses and puts on make-up and wears a wig, and they're considered a cross dresser.
The reason they may do this is -- there are several reasons. It may be that as a child, they were dressed up as a girl and got a lot of attention. And they felt validated and they felt loved and they felt the affection from the people who are dressing them up. And so they learned to pair those warm fuzzy feelings with wearing the clothes of the other sex. And so when they go into adulthood, they find that by dressing in the clothes of the other sex, they feel comforted. They feel relaxed. For some people, it’s an escape from their lives.
A lot of men who are in very high pressure, highly macho positions find that the only way they can escape from the stress of their daily lives from having to be in this role is to swing completely the other way and become ultra feminine. And so they dress in female clothing.
Some people have the feeling that they are born in the wrong body. But they're really not ready to make that commitment. And so they get their toes wet by cross dressing. And so that’s a little bit about what is cross dressing.
