The cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground on Italy’s West Coast -- and now Italian police have arrested its captain. Here’s MSNBC.
“The captain of a ship has been arrested after a crash that killed three people. Authorities now say 40 other people are still missing.”
Why the ship hit a reef, which ripped a gash in its hull, is still being investigated, but survivors said the scene was reminiscent of the Titanic. The captain is being investigated for manslaughter and abandoning ship. CNN reports from Italy on the arrest, and survivors’ reactions.
“Very serious maritime offense - he was off the ship before his passengers had been provided for.”
“Survivors shared a very common anger with the way the evacuation was handled -- they weren’t given any information they say. They knew -- there was no electricity, and the way the ship was listing - they were in serious trouble. Many of them self-evacuated.”
CNN also reports many passengers lost their passports and have little clothing or shelter. Rescue efforts have been halted for the night, but The Economic Times says the danger isn’t over.
“... [divers] recovered the ship's ‘black box’ which should contain records of the precise route and conversations among the crew … Police also warned of the risk of pollution as some 2,380 tonnes of oil remains in the ship's tanks.”
More than 4,000 people in all were aboard the luxury liner. It reportedly ran aground only a few hours after leaving port.
