Male: Welcome back to Gomi Style. The last episode the after party flower bouquet got such a great response that we decided to do another back to school dorm design project. I am talking about the heavy metal chess set. Joining me on today’s project once again is Kat the residence Gomi Stylist and the recent dorm well.
Kat: That is right.
Male: If you are just making the chess pieces, the only materials you need are the hardware, the Patina chemical and a little bit of clear coat. But if you want to make the chessboard as well then you need the table, the two inch masking tape, a straight edge, a box cutter as well as some metal paint.
Making the chess man is like a puzzle using knots, bolts, washers and anything else you have to create all the pieces. Every set will unique base on whatever hardware you have on hand. The set we are making today uses pretty common hardware shapes and sizes that can be found at any hardware store. So if your set is incomplete or you end up missing pieces it should be easy to match them.
I like to keep the shiny galvanize steel look for one side but the other side need something different. Today we are going to keep the metal theme by forcing one side to rust using chemicals. Galvanize versus rust, it would be a nice contrast.
Now, I am using a very commonly available Patina Chemical that you can get at hardware stores or craft shops and basically this stuff will do in just a few minutes what nature might take years to do and it will turn this rust proof galvanize steel totally rusty in just a few minutes. It could have been easier.
Male: Two inch masking tape is the perfect size for making a chess board. So find the center line of your table and lay eight strips of tape. Mark two inch lines in the perpendicular direction and they should result in an eight by eight grid of two inch squares. You know I am asking job like this might take about an hour to set up but it might only take about five minutes to paint.
Kat: Follow the scrub board.
Male: Lightly square the tape. Be careful not to cut two deeply into the wood although a little is okay. Peal off every other tapes square and there should be left with a perfect checker board pattern. Hlaf exposed wood and half masked off.
Now, lightly spray the whole surface with the primer and let it dry. Then, brush on the metal paint. I am using copper but it also comes in iron, brass and steel. Spray the whole surface with the Patina Chemical. You will see it is start to change color almost instantly and the process will continue very slowly for a long time. It is rusting metal after all.
After everything is dry carefully remove the masking tape to reveal the chess board. Lightly spray the whole surface with several coats with clear coat. Spray the chess pieces as well.
