Ty: Hey everybody! It’s DJ Ty and DJ Rick.
Rick: Hi Guys!
Ty: agi@prodj.com and we’re going to talk a little bit about ourselves. What we’re all about, what we as parts of agi@prodj.com and bring to the table, bring to the market as DJ’s and Rick, just tell them man. Tell them a story.
Rick: Tell them my story.
Ty: Yes absolutely because it’s awesome. It’s cool.
Rick: Everybody has a story and that’s what we love about our customers too but many of you I’ve talked on the phone or emailed back and forth with. I’ve been DJaying for about two decades. I’ve got started in 1989. I cut the bag early in high school. Actually, that gives away my age too. I’m 40 years old.
Ty: 40 is the new 20.
Rick: That’s what they say.
Ty: Okay.
Rick: But I started DJaying back in high school as a high school project. I cut the bag really, really early. There were something about being behind the scene and making the experience happen which to me, that was goose bumpy moment and I still get it 20 years later. I want to share that actually from the first 17 years, it was part time for me.
Ty: Yeah, it was the back burner drum.
Rick: It was. I had the corporate sales job. I was a pharmaceutical sales rep and talking to doctors doing the 30-second sales call on my drug. We’re in the suite.
Ty: Can I have in the back that threatened to kick your butt if you ever come back, how kind of fun is that?
Rick: And it wasn’t me. Meanwhile on the weekends, all my company bonuses that I made from my work, I invested in this much gear as I could which—that’s a common thing from working at agi@prodj, is we get to listen to the questions. Yeah, I’m just getting started, I’m lost, I don’t know what to do. I’ve been there.
Ty: Right.
Rick: You’ve been there I mean you know what that feels like. So every time I get a bonus, I just invest in bigger and bigger equipment. And then about July of 2007, just almost two years ago, that’s when I pull the plug. I’m working for the corporate folks and decided this is my passion. This is what I feel like I was put on this earth to do. And I became a full time single operator or mobile disc jockey company. And I’m actually proud to say that I’m not a cocky guy but, I feel like I’m probably one of the best mobile DJ’s.
Ty: You are.
Rick: Who specializes in the Pacific Northwest.
Ty: Hands down. One of the best for sure.
Rick: I’ve got two receipts from back in the 90’s when I did weddings for $375.00. I have the receipt still and the contact information—
Ty: Well you know, that was how many years ago? It was really sad, is there still people charging that much.
Rick: That’s a good thing.
Ty: That little.
Rick: There’s a whole mind set of getting what you’re worth in the mobile DJ industry and that sort of one of the things I hope to bring to agi@prodj is as a mobile, how can I book the number of events that I need to book? How can I make more for it which by the way my average wedding for 2009 is about $2000.00 to $2500.00? I’ve got one that’s on the book for $2,800.00. That has everything to do with making that experience something that people talk about forever. And so that’s what I really want to bring to agi@prodj is the mobile side of it. How do you get more per event and I’m excited. I’m excited to be here and be part of it.
Ty: It’s really cool, you’re not jus a mobile jock because I jumped in the club that one night and you rock the 800’s and the DJM-800 and the Serato. So I mean, DJ’s are DJ’s, we can do it all and I don’t think—one of the really cool thing and unique things that you do is, you’re not the trainer—you know fade everything in and out like a radio. You spin at your events like it’s a club.
Rick: That’s true.
Ty: Everything is beat matched and beat mixed.
Rick: I mix it and in fact, you can even interject. People ask me for my mobile experience. If you go to agi@prodj at YouTube channel, you’ll actually see that I think you are subscribed to my channel, which is basis loaded mobile DJ as the channel and feel-free to check out some of the videos there too. If you’re a mobile guy and you want to talk about how important subwoofers are, set up, and beat mixing, all that stuff is covered there. I’m more than happy to feel those phone call, enough about me.
Ty: Yeah anyway, God, how many years I’ve been with this?
Rick: A couple of years longer than me.
Ty: Yeah, 22. I started in high school. My incredibly amazing parents co-signed along for me as a sophomore in high school. Drove me up to Portland an hour and a half away, picked up my new marked PPD Mixer and my 2 Technique 1200 MK2 that I still own to this day and they still work. They still look the same. And that was it. That was the beginning of it. That is the same thing as you, same story.
I started doing mobile events. I started doing the dances for my school. And I always kind of snickered right here and everybody else is talking about “Well I’m going to prom” I say like “Yeah men I ran to my tucks and the flowers, and the limo, and the dinner, and I just drop $600.00” I said, “That’s cool. I just made a grand.”
And the whole mole of thing, you started the mobiles and then onto—where my career went was doing in a club stuff.
Rick: Right.
Ty: And a couple really—well there’s been a couple of really successful things here in town that again nobody likes to brag but—
Rick: Well I can brag for you. It’s a successful club DJ. You’ve turned a ton of places around
Ty: Right.
Rick: Serato beta tester, you know, probably as much as any DJ about Serato in the country I would fair to say.
Ty: Right, at world.
Rick: World. Even world.
Ty: April of 2004, agi@prodj actually started the first Serato Scratch Live forum even before the Serato. We were taking care of people from day one right out the door.
Rick: I actually did one of that.
Ty: Yeah, Jason was monumental in getting that started.
Rick: Jason Feldman is right down out here.
Ty: Jason is.
Rick: He’s part of this too.
Ty: He started it. He’s the man, that’s a whole another story. We’re going to get him on the couch next time, right Jason? Anyway so you know, there’s the club gigs, and there’s you pack in the club out and then I’ll be honest with you and this—I love telling people stories like this because I got screwed a couple of times. Watching a bar where I would go in there and turn sports bar that had less than 100 people into it on a Wednesday and a Saturday night toward had a line that wrap around the club twice outside and the bouncers are taking $1500.00 bribes from people to let him in the door because they wanted in. No kidding. Dollar drink night, the bar would make almost $15,000.00.
Rick: Wow!
Ty: Yeah so we’re talking college down. It’s docks but again, more stories but I love talking to people. I’m like don’t do it. Don’t say “Well I can only afford $100.00” say fine, give me the 100 bucks and let me show you what I can do but make sure you’re going to negotiate that or make sure you get a contract. I’ve done the hard way. And that guy screwed me. And I got to the point at right click. I walked out the door.
Rick: Great DJ’s sometimes not always the best business savvy people.
Ty: Yeah, we’ve been in the hard way.
Rick: And we can help you with that too. If you’re a club guy that’s looking to make more money somehow and make your events better, perfect. You’re a super guy to talk to. If you’re a mobile who’s frustrating with this market and being undercut by DJ’s on Craig’s list doing $350.00 weddings, I’m telling you guys. Two years ago, 700 bucks. Today, over two grand.
Ty: And almost three.
Rick: So there’s kind of things kind of behind the—about us that we want you to know about. We’re happy that you’re watching this video. We’re very, very loyal fans of our fans, and we get as much out of hearing from you as you hopefully get from us.
Ty: Yeah definitely and we love to share our experiences. We love to help and educate people on how to get them—there’s a lot of stuff out there on the web. And you know where two people are going to pick up the phone and we talk to people all the time and you know, “Thank you so much for spending that time with me. I can really appreciate it” the guy that just with us recently, Daniel and you know if you’re watching us man. He went from a new mark mixer, mixing virtual DJ in internal mode using his laptop sound card and the mouse and he has now bought, he bought a CDJ-400. He didn’t like that with the laptop and he’s going to use it as a single sound card. But a second CDJ -400, still didn’t like the way it worked out, and now he has bought a DJM-400.
Rick: Just today.
Ty: Just today and a copy of SL3. So he’s gone from single $150.00 mixer and a laptop to the whole Pioneer rig running in inter mode on a brand new SL3. He’s taking his show from this level to like this level. And I’m actually proud to say that we helped him to get there and I guarantee it a year from now, the guys have been making more money.
Rick: Right no question.
Ty: Yeah for sure so I mean, we’re here guys definitely. That’s why we do is we love this. This is our lives. It definitely, it’s my life and I there’s a song about that?
Rick: Yeah.
Ty: Anyway—
Rick: Dr. Alvin, it’s my life.
Ty: That’s right.
Rick: So we’re out.
