DMQT #8 - Adobe Lightroom - Painter Tool

Welcome to the TDMD Daily Tip Podcast. My name is Marcelo Lewin. The digital media dude. Today’s tip is for Adobe Lightroom 1.2 in how to work with the painter tool. So let’s get started. Okay, so here we are in Adobe Lightroom 1.2, probably one of my most favorite applications to work in of course after Final Cut Pro. One of the tools that I’m covering today is called the painter tool which is located in the toolbar under the library module. And you can get to the library module by clicking on library and you can get the toolbar by clicking on the letter T which toggles the tool the toolbar on and off. And T stands for toolbar so it’s very easy to find. The other thing you want to make sure is you have painter selected. So if you don’t see this icon of a spray can. Then you don’t have painter selected. So if I unselect it, you can see that the spray can is now gone. If I click on it again, you’ll see the painter there. So that is one way to make sure that you have your spray can and in your toolbar turned on. One of the closest things you can do with painter is apply a variety of attributes or settings to a whole bunch of pictures. So let me explain, if you click on the painter tool. It will change to paint and then you have an attribute here that you can select and you can paint key words, labels, flags, ratings, metadata, settings or rotation. So for example, let’s say right here we have a picture of this guitar player and there’s one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven. We’ll just apply guitar player, hit enter and then I’m going to go ahead and paint the pictures with the spray can, and what I’m doing is I’m actually dropping the keyword guitar player to these pictures. So for example you can see the guitar player. There are 10 pictures which are the pictures I just added, if you count one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, I can click on my keyword tags and then I’ll only see the guitar player once. I can go ahead and easily remove the keywords. As you can see now that we have applied the keyword guitar player to each of this photographs. My icon turned from a painter to an eraser. So I’m going to go ahead and erase each photograph. And what’s going to happen is since we’re only looking at photographs with the guitar player keyword tag, they will start disappearing from the view. So there they go. So I just removed four pictures and basically I’m just going to leave let’s say these two. So now I just easily painted or added keywords to overwrite your pictures. I’d then go ahead and go back to the all photographs for this. Now keywords are not the only things you can paint. You can paint a variety of other things. You can paint a label. So I can add a label color to these pictures easily. I can paint a flag. So I can choose if it’s a picked or un-flagged or rejected picture. So for example we’ll say reject. Then I’ll just say that this one, this one and this one are rejects. You can see my rejects right here. Again if you want to remove what you just added, all you do is put your mouse over it. If it turns into an eraser, you can easily remove it. You can add ratings to it and you have your stars here. So I can say I’m going to give it four stars and I’m going to say this one, this one and this one is four stars. So you can see my four stars here. Again we’ll remove those. I can give at metadata and you’ll see any predefined metadata sets we have. I have none at this point. I can also paint settings which is pretty cool and basically what settings are, are your lightroom presets that are either standard and come with lightroom or the once that you create yourself. So for example let’s just say I want to give a cold tone to a variety of pictures. I just select settings from the pull down menu in paint and select cold tone and then go and paint away. And you can see that my images are being painted with that. Now there is no erase. So what you need to do is command Z or control Z to undo. The last paint you can do is rotation. So I can rotate left, right. I can flip horizontal or vertical. So as you can see the paint tool is extremely powerful way to apply something to a variety of pictures.
