Let's talk about the magic gray area in between close range where clearly the disarm is what you will do and long range, when you are so far away that running is your only alternative. Mid range, step back just a little bit, you are just far enough away that if you turn you feel like you are going to get couple of rounds in the back and yet you are too far away where you think that if you reach forward to try to deflect the gun and you see you I have a long way to go to get inside the danger circle. So unfortunately self defense is very situational and I can not be there to answer your what if questions.
So what you need to do is start thinking if then and the answer to do I run? Or do I try this, depends upon many factors. Are you alone? Is it night? Is it dark? Is it raining? What are you wearing? Are there multiple attackers? Do you have somebody with you? Is there someplace you can run to? Maybe your back is up against the wall and you don't have a choice. Keep that in mind that if you a can comply and give them whatever it is they want keys, money, car you should do that. If however again you are in that magic midrange and you think I am going to cooperate, I am going to give them my money, I am going to give them my keys. He is going to take my money, he is going to take my keys and then he is going to shoot me, then you really can't go on can you? If you are about to die anyway, you must act to save your life and there is no right or wrong decision in that situation. Remember the alternative I told you the only time you are trying to run or reach and grab the gun was because you are about to die anyway.
So keep that in mind, you have the rest of your life to do this technique that may only be a second or two, but you have to do something to act to try to save your life. So remember close range that's where you can – the gun is actually touching you maybe or certainly close enough that you can easily deflect and get inside the danger circle, that's when you are going to try to do the disarms that you have been taught on this tape or long range if you can, you comply, you give me keys, you are giving your money, maybe the money goes this way and you run that way. There are a couple of things to keep in mind if you do make a decision to run.
People would be surprised at the relatively low hit ratios for handgun involved shootings even in amongst the law enforcement community, handgun involved shootings only result in an average hit ratio of about 16-20%. So if he fires his five rounds at you while you are running and if it is night and he has got a cheap gun and you just toss the money this way and you can run maybe in a serpentine pattern, look for concealment, look for cover. Cover mean hard target. Things like a dumpster that a bullet won't go through, that's a cover. Look for concealment maybe a hedge, once you dive through a hedge he can't see you, a bullet can pass through it but he won't know whether you ran left or right.
So those are some things to keep in mind once you have made the decision to act to save your life. That if you are at long range you run, you comply if you can, maybe you give me your keys and your money, if he turns around he just gives you on, he takes off. Keep in mind the handgun disarms you have been taught in this tape are last resort. You will only do these if you think you are about to die anyway.
