Dangerous Fad Diets and Drinks
Hello! I'm Kimberly Walleston and welcome to Insiders Health TV where we bring you the freshest happenings in the world of medicine without the quack propaganda. Today we’ll be talking about the downright dangerous Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet as well as an alcoholic drink that was banned at one New Jersey College.
Everybody is looking for that quick way to shed a few pounds even if it can have a dangerous effect on their lives. But one of the most ridiculous diets we’ve heard of, is the Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet. In the book, 21 pounds in 21 days, people are encouraged to turn to a diet of veggie and varied drinks to shed weight. It also requires digestive enzyme pills and a coffee enema. Great way to wake up!
Well, it would be great to lose that much weight in only three weeks. It’s been wildly proven that these types of fad diets don’t work and can be extremely unhealthy. Even on the detox diet’s website, they warn you that you might experience acne, rashes, nausea, headaches, constipation, diarrhea, ear problems, and body aches. Wow! Sign me up for that. Well, attempting to live a healthier life is usually a good thing. There are ways so you can do it while avoiding diarrhea and body aches.
In other news, the popular Alcohol caffeine concoction “Four Loko” was banned on a New Jersey college because of its effect on their students. While New Jersey is gaining reputation for booze and irresponsibility, thanks to the popular MTV show, The Jersey Shore, officials for the school are trying to stop the drink that is fondly nicknamed, Black Out in a Can. You can’t just pump while you’re blacked out kid.
Ramapo College banned the drink after 23 people were hospitalized for alcohol intoxication in the fall semester alone. Four Loko contains alcohol and caffeine as well as taurine and guarana which gives you the option of eight candy-like flavors. It comes in a 23.5 ounce can and contains either 6% or 12% alcohol depending on the state. It’s no surprise that something that big and strong is knocking out college students. I'll leave that one alone. But at least people are taking notice and doing something about it. While hazing memories and absurd stories are part of the college experience, hospitalization tends to put a damper on things.
