Host: What if a child is being bullied online?

Nancy McBride: It’s a really frightening situation when a child is bullied online, because unlike in the real world the bullying doesn’t stop when the child leaves the environment, say at school. It continues right into their home. So if a child is receiving threatening or inappropriate emails or communication from somebody, they need to let somebody know.

It’s important that you keep it. You can turn the monitor off but be sure that you tell somebody what’s happening so that that person can seek help whether it’s schools official or it’s with the internet service provider or if in the case of illegal activity, it might even be with law enforcement agency and officer. There are internet crimes against children task forces in every state in this country. And these are trained investigators who are trained to investigate online enticement, online threats, illegal activity online, so there may be somebody in your own community who has that experience and expertise who can deal with the situation. But kids shouldn’t have to deal with this alone. They should let somebody know. Don’t be afraid to tell and seek help so that something can be done about that situation.
