Dealing with Keratoconus - Steve Holcomb's Story Dr. Travis Stork: Well for US Olympians Steve Holcomb, his vision lost was not only frustrating but it nearly cost him his career. Steve Holcomb: My dream as a kid was to be an Olympic champion. It was really meant to be in ski racing but bobsleighing kind of changed my hopes and dreams. And bobsleighing is my life, it’s all I do. Being the driver, vision is critical because I have to see where I’m going. In 2000, I was diagnosed with keratoconus. I was losing my vision. It’s pretty emotional and pretty hard and just hoping I can ride it out just long I have to make it to the Olympics. And slowly getting worst and worst, losing the point where I have decided. I was going to retire from the sport because I can no longer to see. I went to my coaches and say, hey look I don’t think I could do this anymore. Being the top driver in the country they was like, well, before you retire yet, we’ve got to figure something out. See if we can find a way to help you.
