Dealing with Spyware - #3 - Avoiding Spyware When Browsing Online
Hi. This is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome back to our special Butterscotch.com five parts series on how to deal with Spyware.
Now in this segment, we are going to look at a few of the browsers settings that you can change to help deter some basic Spyware. Your best protection besides education will be scanners which we’ll cover in the next segment.
But in Firefox, click on tools, go down to options, click on that. Under the security tab, you are got to make sure that all these things here are checked. “Warn me when sites try to install add-ons” and you can have exceptions. For example I have the Mozilla sites is exceptions. Block reported attack sites and block reported web forgeries.
Let all those things checked and the last thing we talked about pop-ups are often a way that Spyware is installed. You want to make sure you block pop-ups and when you are done, click OK.
In Internet Explorer, this is Internet Explorer 8, click on Tools, Internet Options. You can go here to Security, you can change your level of security from Mid to Medium high, High. You can also create a custom level. You can go to privacy and increase your level of security here, block more cookies and other things.
Make sure you have pop-up blocker ON. You can have settings for it to allow for exceptions. You can also have a play a sound when a pop-up is blocked, show information when pop-up is blocked. All of these things will help at least on some level. Click Apply, click OK and you are done.
So these are a few simple browser settings that you can change that will help deter Spyware.
