Debuking Prolotherapy for Back Pain
Bryan Cranston: Hey Doctors, I have been having some lower back problems. So I’ve tried this therapy called Prolotherapy and I wanted to know what your opinion was on that.
Dr. Travis Stork: So Bryan I have to tell you, there’s not great evidence out there that Prolotherapy also known as Proliferation Therapy work. What happen is they actually take medical grade sugar water maybe dextrose in it is then, as you see on this animation, injected into the area of pain.
The idea is that you’re going to invoke an inflammatory response maybe around your tendons, your ligaments. You’re trying to get your own body to help come repair the injured tissue and this can be used for sport injuries, arthritis, tendon, ligament, muscle tears not a lot of great evidence out there. That one thing is you’re injecting a pretty harmless substance.
Dr. Drew Ordon: I mean it’s not going to hurt.
Dr. Jim Sears: Yes not going to hurt and there’s some people find relief because in their body if it’s done right, you need to inject the right amount, it kind of stimulates the healing response.
Dr. Travis Stork: Do you know what’s interesting to me, when Bryan asks this question I think coming out in the horizon, we’ve had platelet rich therapy injections on the show before. I think there’s more promise there because platelet rich therapy is you’re actually taking your platelets from your body reinjecting them to an area of injury, promoting maybe a good inflammatory response to heal tissues. I personally think that shows more promise.
Dr. Drew Ordon: Injecting fillers into joints if the joints have worn down. I think that works too, that shows a lot of promise.
