Deceptive Shooting Camera Techniques

Videomaker Tips & Tricks. Mark Hall: In this segment we are going to be taking a look at the principles of the deceptive shooting, that is making the audience believe something that's not really not there and we do that through camera angle, camera placement and through manipulating the lens. Now there is a long history of doing these kinds of affects on both film and video and we'll taking look a few examples of those plus taking a parts of clips to see exactly how you can do put these affects for yourself. This concept of deceptive shooting has a long honorable tradition in film and video production. And actually began around the turn of the last century in the late 1890s in Paris, France when a magician by the name of Georges Melies accidentally discovered that he could create all kinds of wonderful illusions by turning the camera off and then turning it on again at the appropriate moments. One of the techniques that Miles pioneered over a hundred years ago was the concept of forced perspective that is putting one object close to the camera in the foreground and another object further away from the camera in the background. By the right camera placement camera angle and lens setting, we can create a tremendous contrast between the sizes of the two objects. One of the classic examples of deceptive shooting we've seen over and over again in feature films and TV shows is what Hollywood very often.
