Hi! I am Thom Filicia from Dress My Nest, and I am here to dispel some design myths.
Running a theme through your entire house. Already, the idea of using the word theme in interior design is probably not the best thing. The word theme in interior design is not something that I am super-comfortable with.
However, keeping a theme throughout the house, I would change that to keeping a point of view throughout the entire house. What you want to try to do is carry that point of view throughout your entire home.
You are the point of view that is bringing in the design into your home. Your rooms, they should have a common thread, but they should be different and they should reveal themselves as the rooms as they are. Your formal dining room shouldn't be like your informal dining room, except they should have a similar thread.
Your children's playroom shouldn't be like your living room, but there should be a similar point of view, and that's really what Dress My Nest is really about. It's about helping people define their interiors based on the way they live and what their sensibility is.
