Hi! I am Dr. John Minichetti. I am a general dentist. Today's video is about how to choose a course that discusses different bone grafting techniques. I've been practicing implant dentistry for 20 years and I am a diplomat with the American Board of Oral Implantology and throughout my career I have seen a lot of different bone grafting techniques and development over the years and it's really a cutting edge now in developing sites for implants.
So when you are thinking about taking a course that discusses bone grafting technique, it depends upon at what level you are at and you certainly want to have good understanding of the different types of materials, as many different materials are out there, a lot of them are manufacturer promoted so you need to know exactly what the materials are, and what their properties or potential could be.
Secondly, you're usually going to learn about socket grafting, or ridge preservation. It's the basis for site development in implant dentistry. Again there are a lot of products out there. You need to know whether you should be using an allograft, xenograft or autograft, etc and what's the potential and benefits and risks of all of them.
Thirdly, you should know about sinus augmentation. Very popular, it's very predictable procedure by one of those predictable grafting procedures that we could perform for our patients and is different techniques, such as osteotome lifting or lateral window or crystal elevation nowadays, hydraulic techniques and some courses do discuss all the different types of techniques.
Fourth, of course there is ridge lateral, ridge augmentation for narrow ridges and that can be developed with bone manipulation, split thickness flap surgery, ridge expansion or ridge augmentation using membranes in particular grafts.
And then lastly, of course for building up deficient ridges, there's the onlay grafting techniques and that can be performed with either autografts, or allografts as you know and you can pick a course that can discuss what are the benefits, what are the postoperative complications and how to handle the patient during surgery and afterwards.
So that kind of gives you an idea of what's being thought out there as far as we are talking about trends and techniques in bone grafting and bone biology and I'll be glad to discuss any questions you might have.
