Depression: What is?

Dr. Myrna Weissman: Depression is an illness that affects people at all ages, in all walks of life. Everyone has some symptoms of depression when they are going through a stressful event like loss of a loved one. But when those symptoms continue and result in impairment then we say they have clinical depression, and that's the time for treatment.

Somebody who is clinically depressed does not veil it. It is a very unpleasant experience, and it's not possible to get over it by just being told shape-up, that usually doesn't work.

Depression has many causes, but we think the most reasonable explanation is that it's a genetic disease which is brought on by environmental stress. So if you have a family history then you are more likely to be vulnerable to depression if you have some stressful event in your life like a divorce, separation, moving, loss of a loved one.
