Okay. This is Joe with learningguitarnow.com, and I'm going to break down that little lick for you that I got from Key to the Highway played live by Derek Trucks of the Songlines DVD and it’s just a incredible lick and he starts out the intro to Key of the Highway off at a live DVD there. And it’s a pretty difficult lick to do in opening tuning. So I'm going to break that lick down for you and let’s just go through it slowly. Once again, let’s open the tuning and we’re playing in the key of A.
Okay, so the lick, break it down slowly, it starts-off like this. We’re going to start on the 3rd fret of the B string. You hit 3rd fret, 5th fret and then you slide, hitting the bottom two strings into the 5th fret. And you apply heavy vibrato to that, those two notes.
[Demonstration]
And then, next we’re going to do a backward slide to the 3rd fret of the B string. Fifth fret, key sharp string and slide into the 5th fret with the B string twice. So slowly, the first part, you got, and one more time, a little bit slower.
[Demonstration]
So that’s the first part of it, and then after that, there’s a lot of space involved and then we’re going to move up to the eight fret on the B string and hit the 10th fret on the B string. Then you’re going to hit 10th fret on the high E string, move back to the 8th fret, vibrato on the 10th fret at the beginning, 8th fret and then the 5th fret of the high E string, vibrato as well.
[Demonstration]
And vibratoing in the right place is crucial, hit this in time because it’s extremely fast. So you got. So vibrato here and hit 5th fret vibrato. You get a vibrato on the 10th fret. We’re going to be a little bit slower and then you got 3rd fret on the high E string, 5th fret on the B string, then you do this thing where you’re going to slide up into around the fourth and fifth, back to the third. So it sounds like that. So you’d have that part.
[Demonstration]
So it just doesn’t sound when I slow, but slowly you have.
[Demonstration]
Flattened up in the five, 5th fret on the E string. That whole lick slows sounds like this.
[Demonstration]
And it’s just a really fast lick and you got to get on your muting down and going in between the strings. One more time, slowly.
[Demonstration]
You get a vibrato this really fast, and it’s only going to sit there for a second and you get that really quick move here. You just got to go.
[Demonstration]
And after that, the next part of it is a pretty difficult. You’re going to hit the 3rd fret on the B string, 5th fret of the B string, then you’re going to slide into the 5th fret of the G string. You got five, five, five all on the G sharp and then the E and then the B string. So you got.
[Demonstration]
Thirds fret, 5th fret and G sharp string, B string and then B string. Third fret, B string and then slide into the 2nd fret of the B string and that’s the first little lick of the intro. So that whole slowly sounds like this.
[Demonstration]
And you got to apply vibrato on that 3rd fret with the little B string here and everything just happens really fast in this lick. So you got form the begging, up with the whole lick slowly, you got sort on the 3rd fret B string. It’s just really hard to play this slowly and fast. It’s just a really though technical lick. One more time, I'm going to play it again.
[Demonstration]
So I mess up a little bit on that. But you see how it’s supposed to go. It’s got some really technical aspects to this lick. You just got to get where you can meet all the strings but I’ll play it one more time for you.
[Demonstration]
Eight fret, 10th fret, then 10th fret, vibrato on the 5th fret, third and then jump back from three to four to three, up in the five, back into the B string, 3rd fret.
So that’s the little first intro lick to that solo. It’s a really awesome solo all the way through, but that’s how to play the intro lick. That does it for this Podcast.
