Patricia Lugar: Well Don, you can develop asthma for the first time in your life as an adult, middle age or even later adult. Normally, we hear of childhood asthma that is sometimes associated with allergies and adult can present for the very first time. The symptoms are shortness of breath, wheezing and chest pain. Just make sure that a careful history, physical exam and diagnostic tests are done to confirm that truly is asthma as some other adult diseases can mimic those same symptoms.
