Welcome to this week’s Guitar meet, and we are going to have this week’s lesson on developing speed. We are going to talk about two different techniques today, and that is some alternate picking and some legato technique. Legato is using hammers and poles.
The sequence that I was just playing in D-major is very simple. Think of it as a finger pattern. So, G is here on the 5th fret, 4th string. We are going to start at the major 7th, which is the F-sharp in this particular case. We are going to use the first finger there, so we are going 1st, 2nd, 4th, and then on the 3rd string, same fret—4th fret, 1st, 2nd, 4th fingers. Then, as we move to the 2nd string, we are going first on the 5th fret, third on the 7th and then fourth on the 8th, and then same again on the 1st string.
Now, remember when we are playing just this section of the link, we are playing alternate picking. So, down, up, straight. (Demonstration)
Now, I suggest you use a metronome when playing this sort of thing because it is very easy to get lost in all of these picking, and if these two guys are not working as a team—if these two lines are not working as a team, one hand will go fast and then the other hand will just sound like a mess. So, it is very important to do it slow before you can do it fast because it will just not happen if you do not. (Music playing)
It is also a good idea to not only play this with a distorted tone, but with a clinging tone on your amplifier, as well. I am trying to sort out a sequence with a clinging tone, then we can really hear what is going on as well, important to play wind distortion and with air distortion. (Plucking) and you can slightly mute with your right hand, so that you can get that pick feeling. (Plucking)
The second part of this sequence is a legato, and it involves all plucks with your left hand, (Unable to transcribe), and one pick per string. So, we are picking out with our pinkie here. (Demonstration) then we move our pinkie to the 9th fret of the 3rd string, and we are pulling off from the 9th fret to the 7th fret, to the 5th fret on the 3rd string. So, we get (Plucking). Then, a 4th string (plucking), so we get (plucking).
