Diabetes Risk Factors

Speaker: Risk factors: You are at an increased risk of developing diabetes if you are over 40, you are overweight, you have given birth to babies over 9 pounds or 4000 gram, you have a family history of diabetes. Aboriginal, Hispanic, Asian and African populations are also at increased risk. Women who have been previously diagnosed with gestational diabetes are at increased risk. Similarly, women who have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian syndrome maybe more likely to develop diabetes or if you have been told that you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose, the metabolic syndrome a combination of obesity with high blood pressure or cholesterol and impaired glucose tolerance; you are also at increased risk.

Dr. Duggan: No matter what your race is, what your language skills are, you do need to learn and in your community there will be diabetic association that you can contact and they can provide you material sometimes in other languages and they can also provide translators as well so that when you go to your appointments you can effectively communicate your issues.
