Mario: Hi! My name is Mario, I am from Los Angeles, California, and I'd like to know if people with diabetes, I mean, is more prone to get cataracts and why?
Kerry Solomon: You know, cataracts are perhaps more common in patients with diabetes. One thing we know about diabetics which is related to blood glucose levels is that when the sugar gets elevated in your blood, it can actually get trapped into the lens. And so with fluctuating blood sugar levels, we think that may help promote the development of cataracts.
Again though, the good news is, there is an incredibly successful and wonderful treatment for cataracts. So if we have to have something occur as it relates to diabetes, at least in this sense there is something we have a very good cure for.
