Asher: Hi! I am Asher from New York. A friend of mine has just been diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, and if left unchecked, what type of complications will he have?
Kevin Miller: Well, first, your friend should be going in for yearly eye examinations to look for problems. Now, the problems that can develop if the condition is allowed to progress untreated, first, you can get swelling in the retina, it's called macular edema, that can blur the vision. And then later on there can be bleeding into the eye from abnormal blood vessels that grow into the eye, and if those things are allowed to go untreated, you can go blind from diabetic retinopathy.
