Diagnosing Bipolar Disorder in Children

Juan: Hi! My name is Juan, I work in an audio-visual industry and I want to know if a bipolar disorder can be diagnosed in young children? Dr. Robert Hendren: We do have limited information about bipolar disorder in pre-school children. Interestingly, in the last year, there have been three studies published indicating that we can make that diagnoses in children 3-7 years of age. The symptoms that are most frequently seen are aggression and irritability but other symptoms include a decrease need for sleep, feeling specially good about yourself or almost high or elated about how you are doing and how things are going and several other symptoms that distinguish bipolar from ADHD. The concern about the diagnoses at this young age is how well it predicts, what diagnoses you might have in the future and concern about relapse even when children do better.
