Diagnosing in Pain Management

Male: Sometimes, it is difficult to make a diagnosis and sometimes the pain not being real and it could be imaginary?

Dr.: You know we hate to say that because people don’t realize when you have a pain problem, whether it is a cut or broken bone, it is not, no pain is perceived at the site where you have the injury. So all pain is in your mind theoretically, whether a patient supposedly has a psychological problem that is causing their pain. We always take the patient that they definitely have a pain problem. We just have to figure out what is causing it. Most patients that come into our practice have been through already 2.5 physicians, they have been through three or four medications, a lot of treatments and very suspicious of the medical community to begin with. And they feel like everyone doesn’t believe them. It is all in their head and I always get around the patient. I said “Of course! Everybody’s pain is in their head. That is where it is perceived.” It is just we realize that there is always a psychological overlay. We find patients that have bipolar illness and certain depressions. And sometimes that can increase pain problems. I mean, just a normal person who has a stressful day will have a neck ache. So we never like to say it is in their mind even though we realize that there is a percentage of the problem coming from that aspect.
