Diet Tips for Suburb Kids
Dr. Jim Sears: Life in the burbs, healthy home cooked meals, well behaved
children, the world moving at a leisurely pace, yeah right. It’s more
like rush soccer moms and take out avenues. It’s all go, go, go out
here. In Suburbia, there’s no greater hero than the ice cream man.
Hey, kids what do you guys want?
Male 1: I want the ice cream cookie sandwich.
Dr. Jim Sears: Parents, that ice cream cookie sandwich has 520 calories, 44 grams
of sugar. That’s almost half of their caloric intake for today. Joe, I
have something that’s just as yummy to switch your ice cream
cone.
Female 1: Thank you.
Dr. Jim Sears: As long as you don’t have it everyday it’s a pretty good choice.
Male 1: I want the strawberry milkshake.
Dr. Jim Sears: That milkshake has almost 1,200 calories. Nobody should eat that
thing.
Female 2: Fruit bar.
Dr. Jim Sears: That’s a great choice. Okay, here’s your fruit bar. It’s made up of
110% real fruit juice and I bet it’s going to help you run really fast
at soccer practice. All right, give me a five.
The Jackson family has ordered a pizza. It’s their weekly Friday
night dinner but today, the pizza delivery person is me. And I’m
going to be delivering their pie with a side of nutritional
information.
Cheryl: Chandler, bring my wallet. Hi!
Dr. Jim Sears: Hey, and you guys ordered a meat only pizza right? That’s loaded
with Italian sausage, pepperoni, bacon, ham.
Cheryl: Well, we only have it once a week so I figured it’s okay.
Dr. Jim Sears: Now, this pizza I made especially for you guys tonight. It’s made
with whole wheat crust, it’s got lots of veggies that’s really good.
It’s only got about half the calories and only by half the fat. What
do you guys think, with this one or this one?
Anna: Pepperoni.
Dr. Jim Sears: All right, you ask for it, there you go.
Chandler: It’s tiny.
Anna: Is this for all of us?
Dr. Jim Sears: I know it’s small but it’s packed in calories. And then of course,
there’s my pizza that I made for you guys. Now this pizza calorie
wise you can eat twice as much of this than this one.
Cheryl: We want that one.
Dr. Jim Sears: That is the great choice. Give me five. When you make healthy
choices, you can eat more of it. My work here is done.
We’ve got actually Cheryl, Anna and Chandler here, our pizza
family. So how did you guys like that special Dr. Jim’s pizza?
Anna: It was surprisingly good.
Dr. Jim Sears: Yeah.
Cheryl: It was really good.
Anna: Because usually I don’t like vegetables and I’m like wait, I usually
don’t like mushrooms.
Dr. Jim Sears: Yeah.
Anna: I’m like I don’t know that.
Dr. Jim Sears: I thought it was great too the mushrooms and the tomatoes were all
really soft. And actually you don’t really notice and the olives too.
The olives were key, they kind of like gave it that meaty taste.
Dr. Travis Stork: So would you be okay if that was the pizza you eat every week?
Cheryl: Sure.
Dr. Travis Stork: On special pizza night?
Dr. Jim Sears: Yeah.
Cheryl: Yes, definitely. That’s our new Friday night thing now.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Very tasty.
Dr. Drew Ordon: Very good.
Dr. Travis Stork: You guys can keep talking. My mom who happens to be in the
audience today tells me never to talk with my mouth full so this is
for you mom.
