Dr. Travis Stack: This patient that you see is one with a progressive, generalized motor disorder. This lady was Britain's Grand National champion for figure skating in 1969, 1970 and 1971. She was brought to my office for treatment and we made her in an intraoral orthotic, which modified and changed the position of her mandible. We are inserting it now and this demonstrates the instant correction of her movement disorder.
Notice how she took a deep breathe, strained out her body and started to walk normally. I'm going to play this segment for you again. While removing the appliance, notice the confusion, the difficulty making normal movements of her body. Each step is taken with great effort. When the appliance is inserted into her mouth, she takes a deep breathe and strides off normally.
Here is the patient on her return visit. She has benign about 10 or 15 minutes and I quickly adjusted her appliance for just minor imbalances. I am showing you these pictures to show that the adjustments hold over a long period of time, this would be the six month follow up. The patient was told to return in another six months was unable to keep this appointment. She returned 18 months later with the appliance worn down and you can see how debilitated she is from not having any care in the preceding 18 months.
Now we're taking this patient's appliance that she was wearing when she walked in and we're going to adjust it in the mouth. This is I want to see completely different. I have resurfaced her appliance and I am in the final fitting stages. How is it feel to you?
Female Speaker: Strange.
Dr. Stack: Strange. You want to try walking. She gets up out of the chair and walks for me. My evaluation of how she moves and walks depends on whether I will adjust this further at this time or let her go for a day or two before I adjust it. You can see her walking is much improved already. Now fee a little better? Okay. I adjusted it again and you can see that she walks much more easily and freely now.
She's had it in for 48 hours now and you can see she walks perfectly. Slept very, very well, good, yeah. One of the things you notice with motor, restful night sleep when you wake up the next morning.
Female Speaker: Yeah. I didn't have ever slept so long.
