Different Stages of Alzheimer's

Karen: My name is Karen. I'm from Lansing, Michigan. I hear there are different stages to the disease of Alzheimer's. I'm wondering if you can prevent the disease from progressing from one stage to the next, and if so, how? What are the latest treatment options? Gerald Kufner: Karen, there are different stages of Alzheimer's disease. And in the early stage, doing cognitive exercises can certainly slow down the progression of the disease. I do not think that you can actually prevent the next stage from happening. Aside from cognitive exercises, there are also a few medications with which you can treat patients who have Alzheimer's and they're not very effective. They will also not prevent the progression of the disease. They will just delay it by about six months or so.
