Hey guys. Hello and welcome to GEEKcompNERD’s computer zone show. And today, I’m going to be talking about IP addresses.
Now, I’ve got a question from one of my subscribers the other day that asked me how to find out the exact IP address of a specific website and how to find out the IP address from which an e-mail was sent. Now, he went further and also asked me, by using that IP address, if you could find out the country, the city and the time that this IP address was used.
Now, that’s really simple. What you’re going to do is, say you want to find out the IP address of Google.com. What you’re going to do is go to ‘Start’, ‘Run’ and type in ‘cmd’ so you can open up the Command Prompt. Once Command Prompt is opened up, all you do is you type in ‘trasert’, T-R-A-C-E-R-T space and then the address of which site—of the site that you want to find the IP address so in this case Google so www.google.com, right? And then you just hit ‘Enter’ and the Command Prompt will start searching for the IP address associated with the specified address.
Now, just ignore all this other action that’s going on in the bottom. There’s no need for it. All you’re going to do is look at this IP address over here. So, it’s 208.69.34.230. That’s the IP address of Google.com. So, if you just want to test it out just to make sure it’s correct, go into a web browser and type in that IP address that specifies it’s a 208.69.34.238. It’s 230, sorry 230 and then you just hit ‘Enter’ and then you can see Google has loaded up so now you know the specified IP address is correct.
So now, if you want to find out this exact server location of where the Google server is located, you just choose that same IP address. Head across to a site called ‘IP-adress.com’. Now, just make sure that when you type in ‘address’ it’s not with two ‘D’s’, just one ‘D’. So, once you’ve gone there, there’ll be a little box over here and all you do is you insert the IP address that you have of Google and then say “Look up this IP or website”. So, you click on that and then it’ll load up this page over here with a little map on the side over here which gives you the location which is in London in the UK. And if you scroll down further, you can find out the country, the state, the city, the latitude and the longitude and even the local time of the IP country. So, it gives a really detailed information of the specific IP address. So, it’s really useful.
And another really good use of this is if you want to find out where, say, someone who attacked your computer, now lately, anti-viruses have had this new feature that they give you the IP address of someone who has recently tried to attack your computer and it gives you a little pop-up warning saying “Your computer was blocked from a specific IP address”. So, if you want to find out the location of this IP address, you can head across to the same site, type in that same IP address and get the same detailed information, the city, the latitude, the longitude and even the time of the local country. And if you’re on this, I think you can zoom in, it says “Click for big IP address image” and you can actually find the street at where this IP address might be located. So, it’s pretty advanced. You could use it for a lot of great deal of purposes.
Now, the next question that my subscriber asked was how to find out an e-mail trace and IP address. So, you just click on ‘E-mail Trace’ up here and you can e-mail trace from a couple of websites and what you have to do is find out the e-mail header and if you don’t know how to get the e-mail finder and you just click on ‘Click here’ and it’ll take you to another webpage that will tell you how to get the e-mail header from specific web services. So Outlook, Yahoo, Google, Hotmail and if there’s enough time to burn down I’m sure you can find other sources to get the e-mail header, say, AOL and RediffMail and all these other e-mail services. So, I’m just going to say use Yahoomail as an example. If you want to find out the IP address of a message you got on your Yahoomail, you right click on the message, click on ‘Show full header’. It’ll open up in a new tab and then just copy and paste the e-mail header and paste it into that little box that we saw before, this one down here and then say “Trace e-mail sender”. It’ll give you the same detailed information with a map, the country, the time and everything. So, it’s a pretty website and you can use it for a great deal of purpose. So, that’s it for this tutorial.
