Dilation and Extraction Abortions

Dr. Dyan Aretakis: The actual medical term is dilation and extraction and it accounts for 0.2% of all abortion procedures done in the United States. It involves dilating the cervix and removing the fetus intact through the cervix and through the birth canal.

The risks associated with dilation and extraction really are those compare to other ways for removing the fetus. So if a C-section have to be done, that would be a surgical procedure and that would have more risk.

With any type of a procedure, there is a risk of bleeding, cramping and infection. So those can occur with the D&E.
