Disappearing 9 Patch Quilt Block

This looks like a fun metal block, it’s called Disappearing 9 Patch. And you can do it as a total scrap - or you can figure it out and make a design out of it. You start with a simple 9 patch and it suggests using dark and light fabric or darker and lighter fabric. I’ve used a couple of different fabrics there all kind of greens and yellow.

The idea is that you put your darker fabric so that you make an x through the center of your block and then the lighter fabrics around the outside in the center portion of each side of the block. So, the first thing I’m going to do is sew them together and it’s just sewing a regular 9 Patch.

Now I have my 9 Patch that sewn together and what I’m going to do is cut it into quarters right through the center. So instead of measuring and trying to figure that out, I’m going to fold that in half and finger press the center and line up my ruler. I'm going to cut it. I'm going to turn it this way and do kind of the same thing instead of trying to line them so it will look that way. I'll just go ahead and cut one side of its center.

Now that it’s cut, you just have to re-arrange it and you can re-arrange it however you like and then sew the pieces back together and then you have a brand new block.

Once you’ve got them sewn together, it looks like this approximately and you just continue to sew them together. Just sew your 9 patch cut and re-sew. You can create blocks that are similar so that you’ve got a repeating pattern or you can do it so that they are completely random.

So, this is just a kind of fun way to create a quilt. All you really need is a ruler and a rubbery cutter and some different kind of fabric.
