Localization allows a binaural to isolate the desired source of sound from the background noise by "focusing" on a single source and "ignoring" background noise coming from other directions. Have you ever been talking to one person and became interested in something some one behind you was saying? Remember how you could look forward into the eyes of the person speaking to you and, in actuality, you were concentrating your hearing on the conversation going on behind you? You were using localization then. You need two ears that have balanced hearing to do that. Your brain does most of the work for you but it needs a balanced signal from two ears to do it. Using one hearing aid instead of two, when two are indicated, does deprive the brain of a signal from one of the ears. The longer the brain is deprived of a signal the more the brain has to relearn when and if a signal if eventually provided (a hearing aid is finally fit on the unused ear).
