Hi, welcome to lessonswithtroy.com. Today’s lesson is going to be over the country gospel theme “What a Friend we have in Jesus.” And I’m going to show it to you like I do all my videos close up to the left hand, the numbers and I’ll go measure by measure or phrase by phrase whichever one is the easiest to understand. And then also I’ll show you close up to the right hand so you can see exactly what I’m doing. Let’s get started with that first phrase.
This tune “What a Friend we have in Jesus” I’m doing it in the key of C and we will just go on and work on measures one, two and three which I consider the first phrase of the tune. It will sound like this slowly.
[Demonstration]
Now what I’m doing there, that’s a slant. We’ll get to that in just a second, that’s a measure of three. Let’s go over measures one and two. So first I start with the key of C something in my fifth fret. Now, we start with that third string to second string on the fifth fret. Now, I’m going to show you the right hand in just a second but it sounds like this.
[Demonstration]
Five and five on my third second string, that’s three and four on my second and first string. Then I slide up to fifth fret on my second and first string.
[Demonstration]
And right there, before I do that slant I’m getting second to first string.
[Demonstration]
I hope you can get that right.
[Demonstration]
Okay, how to do the slant, I’m here on my fifth fret just kind of twist my bar like that, I’m going to forward slant.
[Demonstration]
So I bring it to my seventh fret, first string sixth fret, and second string.
[Demonstration]
And just slide it back to my fifth fret there.
[Demonstration]
Try to get that as close to in tune as you can. What you can do is you can check the right notes your playing is F. Now, on your second string you’re playing A on your first string, F and A. You can get those same notes on your tenth fret because that’s a straight bar you should be able to get that very close in tune. And then, as you go to your slant.
[Demonstration]
Alright, so you can try to match that up, just for practice. But just get used to doing that slant, and bring it back to that C chord.
[Demonstration]
So I have to do the slant, I’ll bring it back to my fifth fret.
[Demonstration]
We’re going to stop here like second to third string and another double slant with my third and fourth string.
[Demonstration]
Okay, just check out the right hand what it looks like. So I have this little black cloth here so you can see the string a little bit better so you can get a good angle there. I just start off here with my thumb like third string, index on my second then there is double stop I’m using my thumb and middle finger.
[Demonstration]
Just like that, thumb in the middle and some use thumb and middle for the slant. Bring it down and index and tone and then thumb and index for my second and third and third to fourth.
[Demonstration]
Okay, let’s move on to measure number four.
