Hi! Welcome to LessonsWithTroy.com. Today’s lesson is going to be called 10 Monster Licks. Fast licks for the dobro. I’m going to take you through and show you 10 of my favorite licks that you can play really fast or at medium tempo. But normally it’ll help you pretty fast. So let’s go ahead and get started with that first lick and I’ll show you just like I do in all my videos. You’ll see the left hand here with the numbers then I’ll show you the same lick with the right hand, and explain exactly what I'm doing, and do it slow. So you get it. Let’s start with that first lick. Like number one, measure number sounds like this slowly.
[Demonstration]
A little bit faster
[Demonstration]
So it’s in G. You can play this over a nice G7 chord that has a—you kind of center it around this F natural.
[Demonstration]
Okay I’m just going to play a few times so you can really get it in your head. I’ll it play it slowly. And start it of, let’s play this in real slow and just work your speed up until you can play as fast as your technique can allow.
[Demonstration]
What I'm doing there is I'm tilting the bar forward on my first string there, sliding out two to three back down to two and then playing off to zero. The next part of the lick goes--
[Demonstration]
I'm going one to my second string and then zero on my first string, and back to one. So far we’ve got--
[Demonstration]
Once again, one on my second string, zero on my first, back to one on my second. And I'm pulling off one to zero there on my second then going to two on my third, and then I’m going two on my third, zero on my second string, and then two to zero on my third. So far, we’ve got--
[Demonstration]
And then we’ve got just three on your fourth string, then open third string. Three on your fourth string, open third string.
[Demonstration]
Let’s put that right on the beat, so it’s going to be like this.
[Demonstration]
Let’s play it kinda fast.
[Demonstration]
So I need to practice slowly too.
[Demonstration]
So make sure when you’re doing those pull off, you really get a nice, crisp snap to that. Re-pull straight back and you really get a loud pop.
[Demonstration]
Let’s check out the right hand for lick number one. For lick number one, I’ve got the right hand fingering right now on the tab but it’s going to look like this slowly. You can use your little finger here on the first string and then we’re going to the index to the second string, middle on your first. Basically what I'm doing is I want to keep these three fingers right here.
[Demonstration]
And then my thumb will play my fourth string. So my thumb is going to be playing my third string and my fourth string. Other than that, these fingers are just playing these two strings. My middle is playing my first; my index is playing my second.
[Demonstration]
Okay now what I do sometimes there is I do a real quick roll or you can do it with your thumb, or you just do a strings scrape. String rape whatever you want to call it. And then you’re going to mute out with your left hand, all the notes but the one that you’re hitting are all the strings but the one you’re hitting--.
[Demonstration]
So I do that and sometimes instead of doing that, I’ll just do it real quick roll like that and is muted out all the notes but my first string there. I’m sure my bar but I’ll just tell you my bar is just tilted forward and it’s just hitting right there on my second fret first string, and then the strings are muted out. So once you get that done, you can do that real quick roll.
[Demonstration]
Let’s move on to lick number 2.
