Hi. Welcome to lessonswithroy.com and today’s lesson, we’re going to learn “The Star Spangled Banner” in the key of C and 3/4 time. Let’s go and get started with that first phrase measures one, two, three, four and part of measure of five. If you have a tab that you’re going to print it out and set on the stand in front of you, we’ll go and get going here.
I’ll play that first phrase once again, that measures one, two, three, four and part of measure five in your tab. I was playing a few times to get into your head. So I’m going to start on beat three so here we go. One, two, three.
[Demonstration]
So that’s what we’ll work on for this part of the lesson.
[Demonstration]
So what I’m doing there is I’m just doing a reverse roll and I’m going to add my fourth, fifth and sixth string and I’ll show you the right in and just the second. We’ll just work on the left hand right now. So I have my bar here on my fifth fret and just keeping the straight fingers flat behind the bar.
[Demonstration]
So we’re doing a reverse roll there, five, five, five and bring it back up five, five, and then do triple stop there on my fifth, fourth and third string. So far, we’re at fourth string, fifth string, sixth string for the reverse roll, bring it back up, fifth string, fourth string and then the triple stuff and I’m going to fifth, fourth and third string in that little bass note and the sixth string.
[Demonstration]
Okay that part, I’m just going to slide, I took my bar and just a little bit here right on the tip and then I’m going to slide for my fifth fret, down on my third fret and on my second string. I’m doing a little roll there just to give a little spice to that. I’ll show you that with the right hand just for a second. Then slide that back up and the fifth fret on your third string. So that’s the fifth fret in the fifth string, fourth fret on my fourth string then I do a double step there, slide into my fifth fret on my fourth string and they give me my third string open.
So in that little phrase with an open sixth string so once again, slide five down the three under second string back up to five on my third string and then flat your bar out and five on my fifth string, four on my fourth string and double stop there, it’s like four and the five and on my fourth string and keeping my third string open, open sixth string there.
I’ll play at full phrase and reverse starts on the end of the beat three and measure one so one, two, one, two.
[Demonstration]
Let’s work on the right hand. So here’s the right hand for measures one, two, three, four and part of measure five and they’re on your fifth fret so just play out with your middle index of the thumb after reverse roll.
I’ll use my thumb for the next measure and then just do that triple stuff there on my fifth, fourth and third string and that goes right there.
[Demonstration]
Thumb, and then double stop there with index and thumb and that’s the phrase so, you could use your index finger there right I like to use my thumb.
[Demonstration]
Right, so let’s play with full thing in here reverse roll starting it out on beat three. One, two. Thumb, thumb, thumb and then triple stop base and little finger, index and you could do index there where you could do and everyone feels comfortable to you. Here that one or right here.
[Demonstration]
Sometimes, I’ll do this real quick roll and I always kind of tilt my bar up with my left hand and it only get this second string note but the others are going to be near and you’re going to accomplish the same thing by doing a thumb right but some of it I like to do real quick roll.
So you could do that and then slide and slide and slide that fifth fret down your third fret just stays a little bit of spice to it.
[Demonstration]
Let’s go and move on to the next phrase.
