National Dog Day is coming up on August 26. So, let’s celebrate dogs. And to do that, I found this dog bone quilt block pattern, it's kind of a cool little thing. And I've got a shortcut way to sew it together.
Hi, this is Penny Halgren from QuiltBlockLibrary.tv and QuiltBlockLibrary.com. Thanks for joining me. And my pieces are cut out so I'm ready to go. Let’s go to the sewing machine.
This pattern actually calls for cutting this kind of odd-shape piece. And instead of doing that, what I decided to do is cut squares that are the same including all the missing corner. And then, the triangles that are also part of the pattern. And then what I'm going to do is just sew them into the corners of each one of these squares. And that way, I can sew my quarter inch seam allowance, fold it over and have the right shape that I need in order to fit into the block.
Now, that I have all the little triangles attached to the corners here, there’s always a question as to whether to trim the background fabric off. And what I find in this that because my triangles were never perfect, you may be able to see a little bit of extra background fabric there. What I do is leave it one and use the background fabric to—as a guide for sewing the patches together. So now, we’re ready to sew this entire block together. And the first thing I’m going too do is sew these two rows together and then I’ll sew these two together as well. The next step is to sew these two units together. So, I’ll pick this up and fold them on top. And then, I’m going to put a pin here so I’ll remember which ones I'm sewing. And then, I’ll have each one of these rows sewn together.
With each of the rows sewn together, all we need to do is connect them and the block will be finished. So, I'm just going to fold these down and sew this row, and sew the top row to the center row. The top two rows are sewn together and now I'm going to sew the bottom two rows together. And my final seam will be through the center. And finally, the last seam, I'm just going to fold this down and stitch through the center.
Our dog bone quilt block is all finished and ready for a wall hanging or a quilt. Maybe, even a quilt for your dog. If you missed National Dog Day on August 26, and noticed that your dog was a little bit—well, now you probably know what the reason is because he didn’t get his special treat form you in honor of his special day.
