Dorian Mode – Nate Bosch
Hi, I’m Nate Bosch and today I want to talk about the second mode of the major scale
now this mode is called the Dorian Mode. And if we take a C major scale we’re going to
play the notes found in that scale but starting from the second note of the scale so call this
the second mode of the Dorian mode. So we play all of those notes starting from D we
can end it off with another D. Now that is the Dorian mode of the C major scale, all the
notes found in the C major scale played from the second note.
Now the chord we can build out of that scale is a seventh chord and we build that by
skipping every other notes. So we start with the D we skip a note we play an F skip a note
we play an A skip a note we play a C and there you have a minor seventh chord and
that’s built up of the Dorian mode in the scale.
Now that’s just in the key of C. Now if we pick a key, say the key of F the Dorian mode
in the key of F would be all of the notes found in the F major scale but starting on the
second note of that scale. So we start on G now we work our way up so it’s all of the
notes in the F major scale but starting from the second note of the scale G.
Now let’s build the seventh note chord that comes out of that mode. So again we start
with our bottom note which is the G we skip a note play the B flat skip a note play the D
skip a note play the F so there we have the G minor seventh chord. And so there you have
what we would call the Dorian mode.
