Dos and Don'ts During a Dog Attack Male: Right, let's be clear you have two different types here. You have bites and you have attacks, okay. So the bites--happened very often but the attack is this, I'm not letting go. I'm going back and forth on you. Those are the ones that are serious. They can be life treating situations. Dr. Travis Stork: Is that what Momo does? Male: Well. Female: That’s what Momo does. Male: That’s what Momo does, so. Dr. Travis Stork: I feel like Momo is a priced fighter because Momo is looking me in the eyes. Female: Momo is a specialist. Male: He is locked onto you. Dr. Travis Stork: Is he hungry? Male: He's hungry. He is thirsty. He is been waiting. Dr. Travis Stork: Let’s get this over with. Female: He wants some doctor. Male: Alright, let's do this. Dr. Travis Stork: We’re doing this for a reason and the reason we’re going to talk in a minute about what you should do. And you’ve kind of taught me what I'm supposed to do when Momo attacks me for demo purposes. So let's get this done, because I'm nervous. Female: Momo, behave. Male: Okay so what you’re going do is you’re just going to do is you’re going to just lean forward. A little bit, you’re going to stay just like that. Dr. Travis Stork: And Momo doesn’t come barreling in and knocking me over thou, right? Male: He's going to try, unfortunately it's wood so it's a bit little slippery. But he’ll be happy if he knocks down. So, let's see what happens, are you ready? Dr. Travis Stork: So, okay. Male: What I'm going to do is I'm going to go back and when you tap that-- Dr. Travis Stork: Okay, give me a moment. Male: Okay. Are you sure you’re alright? Dr. Travis Stork: Yeah, I'm good. Male: Okay, so when you hit that a few times. She’s going to send him to bite. Dr. Travis Stork: Okay. Male: Alright, so make sure you lean forward, just a little bit just like that. You’re ready and keep it up there. Dr. Travis Stork: You tell me when to tap. Male: You read y Steph? Female: Momo, attack, attack. Good boy Momo, good boy, Momo out. Good boy out, good boy. Okay good boy, yeah good okay sit. Good job Momo. Male: How are you feeling? Dr. Travis Stork: Wow. Male: You feel some pressure? Female: How was that? Male: Heart is pounding, oh My Gosh. I think I'm having a heart attack. Female: I see, good job. Dr. Travis Stork: So I've taken care of dog attacks victims before. Through this protective, this is thick. It's very thick. That hurt. I mean he had my full form in the grasp of his jaws and if he wanted to, I feel like he could have severed my arm. Male: Well I have scars here. These are permanent scars. And this is all through bite suits. So, there is a lot of pressure there. Dr. Travis Stork: Thanks for telling me that before we did this. Okay, so you told me to what do to there but I would panic. So you’re going to panic if the dog is attacking you, but what can make me and everyone else out there less panic striking if they see a dog about to attack? What should we do? Male: If you find yourself in a situation where you come around a corner and a dog comes up and he’s starring at you. He is sizing you up and at that same moment you need to do the same thing. You need to stop, don’t move. Don’t take off running. If you take off running, you’re a prey. It's a prey-driven instinct that a dog has. He's going to chase you and he's going to take you down. Now, let's just say this is a serious dog and he comes and he gets a hold of you. If he is biting for more than about three seconds, you know this is serious. This could be a life threatening situation and you may have to make what I call an executive decision right there. I hate to say it but you might have to take that dog’s life and kill that dog because he might be wanting to kill you. Dr. Travis Stork: How in the world, if a dog does attack like that? And even if he gets to the point last resort, I am thinking what can I do to put this dog down? I hate even to use those words, but it's your life or the dog’s life. What would you do? Male: Well, you need to make a lot of noise, you start yelling. You got to get someone’s attention. You need to look around and see if there is some kind of a weapon or a rake or a trash can lid or something that you can put between you and the dog, because now you have some kind of a barrier there. Dr. Travis Stork: And then before we go break, quick prevention tips. I do have to say as an ER doctor, if you get bit by dog you do need to go to the ER because of the bacteria in the dogs mouth can cause infection beyond just the initial wound.
