Drawing a Cartoon Cat
Hi, I’m Danny Green, I’m a teacher and an illustrator here at the Guilded Page at Santa Fe, New Mexico. We’re in their classroom today, and we’re gonna teach you how to draw a cartoon cat. Okay, we start off adding the ears here, start… we’ll… we’ll do the eyes. We’ll add the basic shapes of the head here, just kind of a football shape for cat, I think. Draw a few whiskers there. Cat’s have a longest kind of neck and draw a collar here. Draw the chest area here, kind of puffy, and I’m drawing him standing up, draw the legs on him here tapered a little more as you get to the paw. Little tuffs of hair at the bottom of the belly just get a sense of furriness. And draw his hind quarters there, sort of a big round shape in the rump. And we’ll give him nice little tail here, little curve there, cats have a nice long elegant line, we’ll draw the back and the quarters here. Okay, we now we’ve completed our pencil outline. And now we will go to our adding an ink outline, I use a brush pen filled with waterproof ink. And we’ll just add some fur there round here, adding the ears here. Draw those big paws, legs here, some fur there, little tuffs of fur at the bottom of the belly, just get a sense of furriness and cats have a nice long elegant line, we’ll draw back and the quarters here. And draw the hind paw, in the back there, and again, big paws with the back feet. Draw the tail here. Draw a couple of little lines at the end kinda suggests a hairy tail. We’ll do the eyes, once with the eyes. Okay, now we’re done with the, add our ink to our drawing now. And we’ll go now and we’ll start adding color we’ll take our pastels and we’ll add some yellow to the face here. Body of him here, cats are kinda more yellowish, not pure yellow, but add some here and. We’re gonna add some brown as well, just add a little bit here in the underside, and again just try to fill in shadows. We’ll smear it around later, and then that’s it, that’s we’ve had all our preliminary colors and now we’ll go to our paper stump here and start smearing around, and start adding shade to it. We’ll work in the highlight, work in the shadow areas here, get a little dark in there, and we’ve added color to the dark side of the cat, the dark shadow areas of the cats, now we’re just smearing up around, and adding a little form to it, gives a little shape and dimension. Okay, and there we are, we’ve finished our cartoon cat, and now we’re gonna move on to a much more bigger animal. We’re gonna draw our cartoon horse next.
