Drawing a Cartoon Lion
Hi, I’m Danny Green, I’m a teacher and an illustrator and a cartoonist here at the Guilded Page in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We’re in their classroom here and, today we’re gonna learn to draw a cartoon lion. And lions are fun to draw because you have the nice big mane, at least in male lion anyway. And we’re gonna draw this big super mane first, draw a big round, round shape of that. And sort of draw it in quick strokes, kinda indicate fur, and we’ll draw his eyes there, add a nose there as reference point and. Draw a little round shape for the ears there, little ears sticking out and. Lions have kind of a squarish face, so we’ll kinda draw a square for the lower part of it there. Draw his front paws there, big massive paws on big lion here. And we’ll have him standing up here, kinda like the MGM lion. Back part of the front legs here, and then tapered a little more as it gets to the paw. Draw the tail here, we’ll sneak here shape for the tail, terminate a little tuff there. And there we are, we have our outline then for our, for our cartoon lion. We’ll go with, put an ink line on it, got a brush pen filled with waterproof ink. Tuffs of hair at the top there, nice big round eyes for lions and kinda squarish, squarish head, sqaurish head towards the end part of it, you know. Get a little heavier hair. Dedicate some shadow on the back end of the paws here, massive paws. Massive paws in the big cat. More or less imitate the same strokes we have here, just little quick strokes for the, for the lion’s fur here. And little tuff there in the end for the tail and send him down to the rear there. And draw little shapes for the ears. Draw a few whiskers there. Now next we’re gonna move on to adding some color, we use a similar color scheme that we did with the horse, I’m gonna add some yellow to the body of him here. Cats are kinda more yellowish, not pure yellow, but add some here and. Then we’ll gonna add some brown as well, we’ll blend those two colors together a little, blend that to a nice tan and add just a touch of, just a touch of brown here. Just around in the shadow areas, just give it some form. And also, add maybe a touch of red to it, just to give it a little more reddish feel, just a bit. And pretty lion like. So, next we’ll take our pencil stump we have here and we’ll start moving color around. Just blended colors more hair, we’re gonna make sure we blend it in nicely. Just make sure we give all the color distributed and blend it around nice, the browns the yellows, making a tan kind of. And there we are, there’s our cartoon lion, and please stay around for the next video. We’re gonna do another beast of the jungle, we’re gonna do the giraffe.
