Dry and Itchy Scalp Treatments

Brenda: Hi! I am Brenda from Sandy, Utah. I just moved here from Texas and I have noticed with the dry climate that my scalp has become very dry and itchy. I am looking for options on what I might be able to do to alleviate this condition?

Theresa Pacheco: Brenda, that's a common question. We have lots of patients like you and they often happen to be college students who have moved from a humid climate like Texas or Hawaii that moved to Colorado which is very similar to Utah. Changes in climate can affect the moisture of the scalp and also produce signs and symptoms of itching. What I'd recommend is buying a bland over-the-counter a mineral product to massage into the scalp at night time.

In addition, you can use antihistamines that are available over-the-counter to alleviate some of the itching. If your symptoms are not relieved with these two agents, I would recommend that you visit a dermatologist to make sure that you do not have a skin disorder like psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis which is dangerous over the scalp that could be treated with prescription medications.
