Okay not too long ago, I showed you how to tape drywall and that was elementary drywall. Now, we are ready for the advanced classes. What does it take to make the transition from a tape seam like this to a perfectly smooth wall? It is not as hard as you might think. Here is what you need to know.
First thing is you got to have the right tools, you have to have a 10 inch broad knife. It is very critical and it has to have one to has rounded or slightly rounded edges. If you buy a brand new tool, those short edges can scratch the drywall.
The next thing you have to do is go ahead and put on a pretty heavy second coat. You strike the top and bottom of each seam so that it is feathered and very smooth and you leave a hump in the middle. This is what upsets most people they think the hump is bad. Do not worry about it. Once the joint compound is dry, take a sanding pole and knock off that high spot. That is the secret.
Then it is time to apply the third coat. You go ahead and just lightly skin coat the joint with joint compound, use your knife, strike off as much as possible in any low spots holes or voids will be filled by the joint compound. When that is dry, it is time to sand and you have got a finish wall surface.
Oh, that is looking good, that is the trick. After the third coat, just a real light sanding is all you should need and you will get professional results on your drywall.
