EU updates mobile rules to boost use of Internet on the move

Nick: European law makers reach agreement Monday on how to free up radio spectrum for new mobile internet services while insuring that regular mobile phone services are not compromised. Under the updated law called the GSM directive, the 900 megahertz frequency reserved for GSM phones can be used for fast internet connections once the law takes effect in October.
Martin: We expect from today’s decision that we can boost in Europe the current number of only 92 million users if 3D telephony substantially above to what we have today, the 500 million users of GSM services. We also expect that the industry will save from today’s directive up to 1.6 billion in capital savings for the whole mobile industry in the next coming years. The directive agreed today will now be put in the official journal and enter to force in October 2009.
Nick: Many users will be able to use their standard mobile phones to access the internet rather than having to trade up to an iPhone, Blackberry, or other more expensive device. With reporting by Paul Meller in Brussels, I’m Nick Barber, IDG News Service.
