Beth: I'm Beth, I am from St. Charles, Illinois. My question is, what are the first signs of ADD?
Albert Galaburda: Well, ADD is usually diagnosed in school, but mothers as you know, Beth, know about their children a lot sooner than school and they can tell that the child is particularly hyperactive.
Although, you have to be careful, because most children go through stages of being a bit hyperactive.
However, by the time they get to school they are hyperactive and they are not paying attention. Sometimes the girls are not even hyperactive; they are not just paying attention.
So the focus is, are they paying attention to school or not, and that's how you make the diagnosis.
