Sarah: Hi, everyone welcome back to diet.com video I am your host Sarah and once again I am joined by Clinical Nutritionist Alexis Beck so thank you for joining us today Alexis.
Alexis: Of course you are welcome.
Sarah: During this week we are supposed to be come aware of eating disorders many people probably are thinking, “Oh I am aware of the minor are grown high school or I read about a certain celebrity who came out admitting she had an eating disorder.” What exactly is the organization trying to help people become more aware of?
Alexis: I think that some times eating disorders maybe you are doing more fashion. If you will or trend versus disease and I think this week perhaps support the fact that this is a real syndrome with real symptoms that can be dangerous. So I think from a clinical point of view it is an awareness increaser if you will.
Sarah: And the newest term probably associated with eating disorder is actually backwards, disorder in eating. What is the difference between an eating disorder and disorder at eating?
Alexis: The difference, I think is when you forgot to disorder eating it does not own you, you still have the disordered eating it does not have you. When you have eating disorder it has you. An eating disorder might start out as an innocent diet and you are in charge and then one moment before you know it turns around and it has you and you cannot control it you cannot eat, you cannot stop hurting that is a very different.
Sarah: You treated a lot of patient for eating disorders over the years what have you notice?
Alexis: Well certainly I noticed that there are more and more people dealing with eating disorders and one of my questions is this what is happening at the pressures form that much more severe for woman to look a certain way so sometimes I ask myself is this disease or decease. Is our eating disorders, our reaction to a culture rather than something clinical? We know that it is a physiologically driven syndrome we know that clinically but few sometimes see eating disorder people who are really part of a trend as I supposed as I said a disease. When you got somebody who is really sick with there blood work is under question versus it is more than emotional habit. You know there is a certain obsession and there is a habituation. It is more than a habit than a disease I think the tradition should be different. I am seeing more what I like to call symptomatic eating disorders than a pure eating disorder.
Sarah: In the early 90’s there is a heroin sheet with Kate Moss and Calvin Klein and it seems like eating disorders kind of were in the spotlight back then. Later we have the Cindy Crawford, I do not know if this was the same time period here but then all of the sudden being fit and muscular came back and do you think that now are we still in the fit is fabulous or are we back to being Nicole Ritchie type body is what most appealing to society. Thin is in and I think thin is now being associated with power and for many girls it is more about being thin than being beautiful. It is more important to be thin than to be smart. That was not always true and I think back to the 70’s were it all started that is where all started and we watch the transcends and the notion of this size zero jean. I think if that is our goal to be in size zero jean rather to be a doctor or a dentist or a lawyer certainly our emphasize of change and I think that is why my office is busy as it is because one out of five girls at ease. Dealing with some type of eating disorder. What can this girls do if they are worried about developing in actual eating disorder?
Alexis: If there is communities there are treatment organizations. Here in Boston we have MEDA and at MEDA for $10.00 we can be part of the self help group we can see a therapist and you can be screened to be referred and see your condition and a lot of the surfaces are free it is just a matter of being aware of what is available to.
